Free press for your new food truck!

How would you like to have the mayor, local politicians or news media come out and celebrate your food truck?  Whether you’re a brand new food truck recently out on the road, or back out for the beginning of a new season; holding a press event is a great way to gain positive, free exposure for your business.  More and more cities and communities are embracing the mobile food movement.  But, even in places that are slower to adopt and accept that street food is here to stay, local politicians still like to celebrate new businesses. The truth is that food trucks are local businesses centered around bringing together communities and creating shared experiences around food which is something city representatives are realizing and standing behind. 

This isn’t the first time that Eric the founder of FoodTrucksIn.com has been present and assisted a new truck during their first day or first week on the road.  After visiting the owners of Open Season, Dave and Kristen, and learning about their new business; Eric realized that their Warwick Rhode Island commissary base location was just a couple blocks away from City Hall.  What started as a simple idea to invite the mayor over for lunch to meet Dave and Kristen, quickly turned into a press event. 

This past week Open Season Food Truck had a ribbon cutting press event outside of their Warwick commissary that went incredibly well and had more than a few special guests. Open Season is one of Providence Rhode Island’s newest mobile food vendors. They specialize in incorporating wild game meats as well as local beef, pork, poultry, and produce into their products. 

Mayor Scott Avedisian of Warwick, Rhode Island cut the ribbon celebrating the grand opening of Open Season, alongside friends, family of the owners and distinguished Warwick representatives. The Mayor’s office sent out a press release inviting local media to attend.  The event was covered by the Warwick Beacon. The Open Season food truck owners and crew were thrilled knowing that they had the mayor's support. Everyone in attendance was impressed with the amount of preparation owners Dave and Kristen had accomplished to launch their new business. It was clear that the mayor was commited to ensure the success and promotion of food trucks in the community.

It is important to keep in mind that even if you don't have a location where you can hold a press event or ribbon cutting ceremony, you have the flexibility to have your press event anywhere. Have your press event at a busy local park, or overlooking the city skyline; you can even offer to take your truck to City Hall and have the event right outside the mayor's office.

A press event or ribbon cutting can jump start engagement with potential customers by bringing consumer attention to your already established social media. 

After the official event keep customers informed let them know it's your first day, first week, or one of your first few times on the road so they know it's part of your grand opening! Try creating some signage that puts the grand opening message out there, use chalk to draw on the sidewalks around your service area, get some grand opening week balloons, and if you get great press from your event be sure to clip it and put it up on your service window.
